US Air Force’s Holiday Shopping Spree: 2,200 PlayStation3s

30 November, 2009 (09:00) | Geek, General, Hardware, Linux | By: admin

From Motherboard: We already know that we don’t need air force pilots to drop bombs on terrorist dinners anymore, just gamers manning drones. And eventually, gamers flying virtual drones. And eventually robots flying virtual drones in the form of manga characters. To get there and other places, the Air Force is buying 2,200 PlayStation3s. They’ll [...]

Windows 7 Already Bigger Than Snow Leopard and Linux Combined

10 November, 2009 (11:03) | Apple, General, Linux, Microsoft, Software | By: admin

From DownLoad Squad: It’s only been a couple of weeks since Windows 7 was released, but Microsoft’s new OS has already captured a larger percentage of the market than Apple’s OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and Linux (yes, all of Linux). This doesn’t come as a huge surprise, considering how many Windows users were clamoring [...]

I’m working on a little network project this week.  Installing the following items for my test network: 1) Smoothwall 3.0 2) Trixbox 3) Ubuntu Server Once that’s setup, I’ll have a little more to add. Update: Smoothie installed and working.  Had to add MAC address cloning, just like a good old Linksys Wireless Router.

2 March, 2009 (07:35) | General, Linux, Software, tools | By: admin

Found a great article on Apt while browsing Digg. With APT, Linux gained the ability to install and manage software packages in a much simpler and more efficient way than was previously possible. Before its introduction, most software had to be installed either by manually compiling the source code, or using individual packages with no [...]

It’s no longer just a movie, it’s the newest venture into the Open Source movement by Microsoft.  They join Google and Yahoo as Platinum sponsers of the Apache Software Foundation. There’s a few links about the deal.

Take the Wubi Challenge

15 July, 2008 (05:03) | General, Linux, Software | By: admin

I’ve run various Linux distros over the years and I’ve always had to figure out how I wanted to run it.  LiveCDs are great for troubleshooting but aren’t a long-term solution.  Dual booting works too, but I’m always a bit wary of  modifying live partitions. Last night I tried Wubi. Wubi is an officially supported [...]
